🎣 gone craftin' at rainbow unicorn for a community art installation
hello! I have very little sanity left in my body. I bet you don't either for one reason or another, so please... make an aquatic themed craft about it.
If you haven’t heard, we’re hosting an all craft clubber exclusive bring your own craft meetup at Rainbow Unicorn on Feb 4 🦄
Take one look at that place, and you know it’s gonna be bomb. What would be even cooler tho is if they offered us all an empty commercial size fish tank (sans-water) to fill with as many aquatic art and ephemera as we can.
WAIT, THEY DID.
That means that you all have one week to make the best contribution ever. If you read through this and immediately thought of your brilliant make, that’s awesome. You sound like a fun person. Click the button below.
No ideas? Don’t worry, I’m actually enchanted by fishing aesthetic and spent many summers on a lake in Wisconsin, so I got you.
did you know the national park service has official crochet patterns????
Oh yes, they do. And they’re awesome. You can find them on nhs.gov. You can stitch your very own Halibut (pictured below), Walleye, or even a triops. I’m glad they didn’t forget about the crustaceans. Can’t you see any of these pals (or all three) in that tank, chilling?
you can make a lot of fish out of a lot of things.
You can make a school of fabric fish out of scraps and buttons. Ann wood handmade has some tips, inspo, and a free pattern handy.
Air dry clay fishies look very interesting to make because they can look cool in 2D or 3D. Pic from Laguna Clay.
This blobfish found on the air dry clay subreddit. Wow, he’s magnificent.
Paper fish would probably benefit the most from not having real water. The really whimsical patterns on these paper fish from sallypayne_design are lovely.

know what else is in fishtanks? not fish.
There are tons of rocks in bodies of water! Our craft fish tank should not be different. You definitely don’t need to go crazy here, but I thought these animal crossing themed rocks from rockstocherish were essential viewing.
I love fishing lures. They hypnotized me as a child – the most forbidden toy of all – and I’d love to see what you all do with some neon colors. *No real hooks, please. Just had to say it.
Some plants out of pipecleaners, paper, yarn, or anything else in your craft cabinet would look awesome. Bonus points for anemones and anything long and wavy.
Use these ideas as a diving point, or craft anything your little heart believes belongs in a fish tank or aquatic scene.
We’ll supply a tackle box of fishing line and other materials for attaching your contribution to the tank. 🐟 Don’t forget to fill out the project form!
Fishin’ for more inspo? Mary made you a Pinterest board with a bunch more ideas.
We can’t wait to see what you make!!!
